I got this instead of the Cap Barbell 40-Pound Dumbbell Set that is popular on amazon due to complaints about a machine oil type smell and off gassing. I thought that since it's "eco" that it wont have any noxious odors. When I opened the package, it didn't have any bad odors. If you put your nose to the weights they almost have a faint bread dough smell to them.
The weights that came in although were different than the description picture. Instead of 4x 7.5 pound plates and 4x 2.5 pound plates, you get 4x 5 pound plates and 4x 3 pound plates. The handle bars do not have any plastic covering and the threaded collars are metal instead of plastic. The finishing lacquer is a bit thin and isn't consistently smooth on the weight plates. The threaded collars and the threading on the handlebars is somewhat rough and abrasive too. The interior handle although isn't abrasive. A handle bar and two threaded collars weight 3 pounds and 11 ounces. The plates are the weight that the numbers on them say they are.
I wish they didn't cheap out on $1 of laquer and extra metal smoothing on the weight plates and handlebars, it would of made it a 5 star product.

I was surprised that no one else had an issue with the odor on these weights. I like the idea of 'eco'. But the lacquer is strong. I can hardly breathe when I lift. And it stays on my hands even after multiple washes. If not for this, I would rate it 5.

I bought this particular set because many reviews on the similar items said that they had a chemical smell and feel to them, I haven't noticed anything like that on this product, no residue or odor at all. They are easy to set up, easy to use, and adjustable enough that I can do the amount of weight that works for me and my husband can do the right amount for him. The only downside I've noticed is that the collars that hold the weights on tend to work themselves loose, but as long as you check them periodically to make sure they are tight it's not a problem.
